How We Research
Every guide on MorningMugPicks starts with one question: will this machine make a good first espresso at home without a steep learning curve?
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the machine type
Espresso machines range from semi-automatic models, where you control the shot, to automatic and pod machines. Our guides focus on semi-automatic machines for beginners.
We check whether each machine has a built-in grinder, since many don't. When you'll need a separate grinder, we say so.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at pump pressure, the heating system, water tank size, the steam wand, the grinder if there is one, and how much counter space the machine takes. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like leaks, a steam wand that struggles, a loud pump or a grinder that jams.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A machine that suits an experienced home barista may score lower in a guide for first-timers.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Espresso machines also get new versions and small brands come and go, so we check each product before we write about it.
When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every machine we cover.
Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. Espresso machines use hot water, steam and pressure, so follow its steps for use, cleaning and descaling.
We don't make claims about coffee, caffeine or health.
